Sunday’s blowout loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars was a microcosm of everything the New York Jets have been about in 2025.
Poor defense, questionable coaching decisions, and crushing offensive mistakes all contributed to the Jets’ 48-20 blowout loss to the AFC South leaders.
New York’s fans aren’t surprised. The team is 3-11, traded away its top players at the deadline, and clearly has its eyes on the future.
Before that happens, though, they have to finish out the 2025 season. For head coach Aaron Glenn, the final few weeks are as important as ever for the soul of the organization.
Jets’ goals for final three games
Glenn has already begun enacting some of those future plans before the season’s conclusion. Defensive coordinator Steve Wilks was fired on Monday morning after the Jets’ defense gave up a combined 82 points in their last two games.
Change is inevitably coming for the roster as well.
That is what makes the final three games against the New Orleans Saints, New England Patriots, and Buffalo Bills so important. It’s a chance for players to show that they belong on the team going into 2026.
“I want to see consistent improvement,” Glenn said when speaking to reporters. “I want to see structure that’s consistent, I want to see play that’s consistent, and I want to see the culture of this football team come together.”
The Jets have already failed in many areas during Glenn’s first season as coach. They seemed to be making progress in the middle of the schedule, winning three out of five games, but the team regressed in the last two weeks, getting blown off the field against Miami and Jacksonville.
For the final few weeks to end the season, Glenn wants to continue taking stock of who he needs to keep beyond 2025 and who doesn’t fit into the team’s plans, a group that Wilks fell into.
“It’s my job to make sure I continue to evaluate everything that’s going on, and I told you guys that,” he said. “That’s my job as the head coach. And I just thought this was the time for me to make that decision (firing Wilks).”
The Jets are evaluating everything over the final few weeks. Every loss draws them closer to potentially drafting their future franchise quarterback, but those defeats will also reveal more needs across the board.
Regardless of whether the Jets keep losing or turn things around, Glenn’s evaluations over the next three weeks will be critical in shaping the organization’s future.
