If the New York Jets’ latest roster move is any indication, the team is close to having a veteran signal-caller return to the active roster.

Gang Green announced the release of practice squad quarterback Adrian Martinez on Tuesday afternoon. Originally with the team during the offseason, Martinez was released by the Jets during final cuts. He stayed with the San Francisco 49ers practice squad for most of the year, only to get picked up by New York again last week.

The reason for that, of course, was the fact that the Jets had both Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields dealing with injuries. Martinez backed up Brady Cook in New York’s loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars.

With Martinez now released, either Taylor or Fields (or both) could be back at practice on Wednesday.

It brings forth a problematic situation for Aaron Glenn to figure out.

Jets make QB move

In the absence of the two veterans, the Jets witnessed some positive flashes from undrafted free agent Brady Cook in an uneven performance. The Missouri product threw for 176 yards, completed 66.7 percent of his passes, and delivered his first touchdown pass.

Cook’s three interceptions, though, were part of why the Jets were destroyed by the Jacksonville Jaguars, 48-20.

Speaking to reporters following the loss, Glenn made it clear that he wasn’t ready to make a decision as to who would start at quarterback in their Week 16 showdown against the New Orleans Saints.

โ€œWhen it moves forward as far as whoโ€™s going to be our quarterback, Iโ€™ll go ahead and say it now: Iโ€™m going to evaluate that and let you guys know that as this week progresses,โ€ Glenn said.

At 3-11, though, it would make more sense for the organization to see what they have in Cook for the final three games, instead of playing two veterans who won’t be the long-term solutions for the Jets beyond this season.

However, Martinez’s release indicates that Glenn may want a veteran running the show for the final few weeks. At the very least, one of Fields or Taylor may return as Cook’s backup.

It’s all up in the air heading into Wednesday’s practice.
