The rivalry between the New York Jets and New England Patriots remains one of the NFLโs most recognizable, despite it often not being very kind to New York.
On Sunday, it was much of the same when the Jets were annihilated by New England, falling 42-10, for which the Patriots loved every bit of the beatdown.
Leading 35-3 with under 19 seconds left in the first half, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel still found time to mess with Gang Green.
Instead of letting the clock run out, Vrabel called a timeout and was then caught on camera looking down his own sideline, appearing to say, โFโ โem,โ while his own players began to laugh.
From the Jetsโ side, the rivalry has been a decade-plus of torture. New York was owned during the entirety of the Tom Brady era, slogged through a 15-game losing streak to New England that wasnโt snapped until Week 18 of the 2023 season, and now finds itself staring at a familiar situation.
Once again, the Patriots appear to have their quarterback of the future in Drake Maye. Once again, the Jets are still looking for theirs.
The same could be said about the head coaching job.
In his first year, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel secured an AFC East title, while first-year Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is 3-13 and 0-5 in divisional games.
Even before Sunday, some Jets fans had a grudge against Vrabel. As Gang Green began their head coaching search this offseason, the former defensive end was widely viewed by fans and pundits as the top target. He took an early interview for the position, which excited fans and led them to think he might be headed to New York.
That excitement, though, didn’t last very long. Just days later, a report indicated that he had his sights set on New England, and he used an interview with the Jets to put pressure on Patriots owner Robert Kraft to fire their then-head coach, Jerod Mayo, after one season, officially opening up the job.
He was officially hired just eight days later and finished the year with a 2-0 record against the Jets.
Overall, it’s the same rivalry, the same result, and the same old New York Jets.
