Following the surprising decision to part ways with offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand, the New York Jets have begun their search for a replacement.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Jets will meet with Dallas Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells on Wednesday to interview him for their offensive coordinator vacancy. Wells has also interviewed with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders for the same position.

Wells, 42, has been coaching the Cowboys’ tight ends since 2020. He oversaw the development of Dalton Schultz and Jake Ferguson, two fourth-round picks who went on to become strong starters for Dallas.

Before joining the Cowboys, Wells spent eight seasons with the Giants (2012-19) in various roles, including tight ends coach (2018-19) and assistant offensive line coach (2013-17).

Wells also spent four years at LSU (2008-11), where he was an assistant offensive line coach (2008-09) and the assistant special teams coach/assistant to the head coach (2010-11).

The Jets are looking to rebuild a significant chunk of their offensive coaching staff. They not only parted ways with Engstrand, but also pass-game coordinator Scott Turner (who had choice words after his exit) and quarterbacks coach Charles London.

New York still has plenty of holes to fill on defense, too, where the team is searching for a defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, linebackers coach, and multiple assistants.

Wells joins Frank Reich and Jon Gruden among the names that have been linked to the Jets’ offensive coordinator role. Reich has yet to conduct an official interview. Gruden denied the Jets when they reached out, per reports.

Glenn has his work cut out for him. With the Jets’ current situation making them an unappealing landing spot for proven coaches, they may have to focus on unheralded, up-and-coming coaches like Wells to fill their coordinator roles.
