“Just here to bang.” Former New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan chose to wear a t-shirt featuring those words.
Is it surprising? Hardly. Is it newsworthy? Not at all. But is it worth thinking about in a way that reminds us of the viral Fourth of July legends that came before him?
Oh yeah.
Let’s first get to the Rex moment…
Although the image is a year old โ happening on the same American holiday in 2025 โ it caught social media fire in 2026. Ryan appears in a red t-shirt with the phrase, “Just here to bang,” alongside former ESPN employee Sage Steele and Samantha Ponder, according to the former’s Instagram caption.
Insert your favorite Rex Ryan fantasy scenario and/or joke right here, right now.
Ryan, 63, is, of course, also a member of the ESPN family. Spending most of his time with diehard Jets fan Mike Greenberg, Ryan opines on today’s league, as well as the current happenings surrounding the Jets, on a regular basis.
Considering the franchise hasn’t qualified for the playoffs since Ryan held down the sideline back in 2011 (the 2010 NFL season), fans hold the man, and the myth of the man, near and dear to their hearts.
More importantly, perhaps (at least on this day), Rex has suddenly been thrust into the Fourth of July virality limelight. This places him alongside some of the all-time greats, such as “Terry,” who just did not know what he was doing:
Shoutout, as always, to the man who made the video pop: The man who captured the video, whose laugh was so ferocious that it silently got stuck in time for a few ticks.
Then there’s the category that is “firework fails,” and this friendly yard gathering that went awry:
In San Diego, Cal., back in 2012, a major fireworks event took Rex’s t-shirt a little too seriously:
Congrats, Rex Ryan: Your t-shirt has at least allowed us to remember the viral legends of Fourth of July yesteryear.
