Benigno has no reason other than ‘no expectations’
Count Joe Benigno as one pessimistic New York Jets fan.
Benigno joined WFAN’s “Tiki and Tierney Show” for his weekly segment. Brandon Tierney, a fellow Jets fan, asked him right off the bat what he thought about the swirling quarterback rumors, most notably involving Aaron Rodgers and Derek Carr. Tierney specifically wanted to know how Benigno is handling all the drama.
“Well, I don’t expect it to happen,” Benigno replied. “It’s very easy to deal with. When you’re a Jet fan for almost 60 years, I always say this: expect the worst [and] you’re never disappointed.”
As Tierney said, “Ah, c’mon,” Benigno continued, “Not for a second do I think we’re getting Aaron Rodgers. Now, every one of my buddies [says], ‘Ah, bro, he’s coming, he’s coming.’ Wake me up when he’s here.”
Benigno believes that the Jets will wind up with Derek Carr. For some fans, that would be welcome news or even a relief, depending on the particular school of thought you follow. We’ve had all types on this site, ranging from Rodgers or bust to Carr as a more cost-effective option.
To Benigno, Carr would be fine, sort of a consolation prize. He can live with it and expect it. If he gets Rodgers, he’s pleasantly surprised.
The true pessimistic Jets fan approach would be to expect Jimmy Garoppolo to be the 2023 starter, or, worse, someone like Ryan Tannehill, Gardner Minshew, or Jacoby Brissett.
