Aaron Rodgers = Brett Favre?

In 2008, when the Jets acquired Brett Favre, the trade was seen as a missing piece for a team on a quest for a championship. When Tom Brady tore his ACL in Week 1 of the season, it seemed to leave the AFC wide open for the Jets to pounce.

Standing at 8-3 with Favre having thrown 21 TDs, Jets fans thought that their dreams might finally come true. The Jets beat the Matt Cassel-led Patriots in overtime the previous week to pull ahead in the division and then doubled down by defeating the 10-0 Tennessee Titans. The team was soaring.

However, it all landed with a thud. The Jets lost four of their last five games and missed the playoffs, Favre was released, Eric Mangini was fired, and the team was once again left without a quarterback.

Still, proof that the team was nearly Super Bowl-caliber came in the following two years, when a Mark Sanchez-led outfit reached back-to-back AFC Championship games.

If Rodgers follows in the footsteps of his predecessor, can he bring a different result? Favre’s campaign was derailed by a torn biceps that he did not disclose. Can the almost-40-year-old Rodgers stay healthy and play up to his MVP standard from 2020-21?

Other than the quarterback position, the Jets have a lot of young talent. Garrett Wilson and Sauce Gardner were Rookies of the Year on offense and defense, while Breece Hall was heading in that direction prior to his season-ending injury. Quinnen Williams is a monster in the middle, while Bryce Huff, Jermaine Johnson, and Micheal Clemons are young and potentially ascending players. D.J. Reed and Michael Carter II join with Sauce to form the best cornerback trio in the league.

Elijah Moore, Michael Carter, Bam Knight, Alijah Vera-Tucker, and Mekhi Becton are other young players whose potential has not quite been tapped yet. All of that becomes more accessible with one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.

Furthermore, the recent addition of Allen Lazard brings in the big, physical red-zone threat that the team was missing last season.

Rodgers also opens the potential of the tight ends and running backs in the passing game, something that was not utilized enough last season. Tyler Conklin can look forward to more accurate passes, while Hall, Carter, and Knight can show off their hands and YAC ability.

The Jets still have some work to do on both sides of the ball in free agency and the draft, but they have the makings of a very promising team. Rodgers-to-Wilson, in particular, is a pairing that Jets fans cannot wait to see.

At +1400, the Jets are still quite a bit behind the Bengals, the team with the fifth-best Super Bowl odds. Can Rodgers beat out Joe Burrow? For that matter, can he beat Josh Allen in his own division?

Now’s the time to put the money on Rodgers and the Jets.
