(Yet another) new quarterback, same result for the New York Jets

When it rains, it pours – except at MetLife Stadium.

The New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons engaged in an interconference slog at East Rutherford on Sunday afternoon, with the latter prevailing 13-8.

Sunday was another game with limited offensive highlights. Over the opening half-hour, the Jets’ most prominent offensive threat was Thomas Morstead, whose 47-yard punt, his second of seven, situated the Falcons at their own one. Two plays later, Ashtyn Davis and Quinnen Williams brought down Bijan Robinson in his end zone to take a slim, baseball-style 2-0 lead.

After another punt exchange, the first play of another sputtering Jets drive saw Dalvin Cook fumble, one forced and recovered by Nate Landman. Atlanta (6-6) would capitalize on it with the lone touchdown of the day, a 20-yard strike from Desmond Ridder to MyCole Pruitt.

Special teams of both scoring and surrender varieties continued to rule the day from there on out. All but three of the final 16 drives of the game ended with either punts or field goals from Greg Zuerlein and Younghoe Koo.

Half of the exceptions were two Jets turnovers, one of which was an interception to Jessie Bates that proved to be the end of the line for Jets thrower Tim Boyle. The next was a fumble from the arm of his replacement Trevor Siemian. The final outlier was Atlanta’s final drive of kneeldowns that allowed them to stay in the hunt for the NFC South division title.

The Jets (4-8) will wrap up a three-game homestand next week when they host the Houston Texans (1 p.m. ET, CBS).
