Many of these numbers are familiar. Taylor, Reddick, Smith, Simpson, and Moses retain the numbers they wore last season with the Giants, Eagles, Cowboys, and Ravens, respectively.
Some of the veterans chose new numbers. Williams’ choice is interesting, as he figures to be a fairly popular jersey seller. After wearing No. 81 throughout his career with the Los Angeles Chargers, Williams flipped the digits and switched to No. 18, as No. 81 is currently held by tight end Zack Kuntz. Perhaps Williams could have worked out a deal for the seventh-round pick’s number, but he opted for the digit flip instead.
Kinlaw will rock No. 54 after wearing No. 99 throughout his four years in San Francisco. A number in the fifties is certainly unusual for an interior defensive lineman. Meanwhile, Fotu will switch to No. 92 since his previous No. 95 is currently held by a certain defensive tackle who fans may have heard of.
Morstead will wear his third different number in as many seasons with the Jets. He wore No. 4 in 2021, when he had a brief seven-game stint with the club. The veteran one-upped to No. 5 in his impressive 2023 season. With Garrett Wilson switching to No. 5, Morstead decided to climb another rung up the ladder for the 2024 season.
