The New York Jets were wise not to count on Carter Warren
Going into the 2024 NFL draft, the New York Jets had solidified their starting tackle duo with Tyron Smith and Morgan Moses, but their backup situation remained shaky at best. The two candidates for the Jets’ top backup tackle spot were Max Mitchell and Carter Warren, a pair of fourth-round picks.
Warren is the more recent draft pick of the two, having been selected in 2023 while Mitchell was taken in 2022. While Mitchell failed to show development in his second season, Warren was just a rookie, so there were some Jets fans who believed Warren could take a second-year leap to become an ideal backup option in 2024.
However, the film doesn’t lie, and what the film says is that Warren should have never been considered an option to be the Jets’ No. 1 backup behind two older starters with injury concerns. Based on Warren’s film, the Jets were completely justified in using a first-round pick on Olu Fashanu to solidify the backup tackle spot.
In the latest Blewett’s Blitz film review, we extensively break down Warren’s technique and fundamentals in his rookie season, showing why he is far too raw for the Jets to count on him.
