NASHVILLE, TN—One of the premier New York Jets‘ defenders will not be on the field against the Tennessee Titans. Before the 1:00 p.m. ET kickoff, the team announced that cornerback D.J. Reed had been ruled out for Sunday’s Week 2 matchup.
Reed joins offensive tackles Max Mitchell and Carter Warren, defensive linemen Eric Watts and Leonard Taylor, and running back Israel Abanikanda as the six inactive players for the game.

Losing Reed is a big blow to the Jets’ secondary. He, alongside Sauce Gardner and Michael Carter II, helps shut down opposing wide receivers consistently.
Without him, New York will have to turn to depth options in the secondary.
Brandin Echols is likely to replace Reed as the starter. He has played a big role in the Jets’ defense before and will not provide a steep fall-off from the veteran cornerback.
Depth pieces Jarrick Bernard-Converse and Qwan’tez Stiggers could also be in line for work, with Reed missing the game.
Outside of Reed, the other inactive are not surprising. Warren and Mitchell are third-string depth pieces that would only be played in emergencies. Abanikanda is stuck behind Breece Hall, Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis.
With Michael Clemons active, Watts and Taylor III do not crack the rotation and are related to the bench.
New York must come out fast and play effectively against the Titans. Robert Saleh’s squad cannot afford to start slow and risk letting Tennessee build a lead.
That task has become much more difficult for the Jets in Week 2 without D.J. Reed in the fold, and how they will adjust to his absence remains to be seen.
