New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn insisted that his team is not the “Same Old Jets.”

After Monday night’s blowout loss to the Miami Dolphins, it’s clear Glenn’s confidence in his roster may be misguided.

The Jets lost three fumbles and gave up two scores to tight end Darren Waller in a 27-21 loss to their AFC East rivals in South Florida on Monday night.

Miami got the scoring started on the opening drive. The Dolphins orchestrated a 10-play series that resulted in a 47-yard field goal from Riley Patterson. The drive was highlighted by two third-down conversions to get into Jets’ territory.

In his opening drive since coming back from a concussion, Justin Fields led New York into scoring range on the ensuing series.

The moment New York got inside the 10-yard line, though, things went horribly wrong.

Second-year running back Braelon Allen fumbled while trying to dive into the end zone for a score. It wouldn’t be the last fumble lost from New York on the day.

Miami responded with a 15-play, 96-yard drive that ate up over eight minutes of action. Early in the second quarter, Waller caught a four-yard touchdown strike on fourth down. The former New York Giant and Las Vegas Raider had retired going into the 2025 season, but applied for reinstatement to sign with the Dolphins.

Things didn’t get much better for the Jets on offense. After a 23-yard run from Breece Hall, Fields fumbled on fourth-and-5 while the offense was in Dolphins territory again.

But after a defensive stop, New York finally got some momentum. The Jets offense drove right before the half and saw Nick Folk connect on a career-long 58-yard kick as time expired.

The momentum built by the last-second field goal was short-lived on the very first play to start the second half. Isaiah Williams fumbled the opening second-half kickoff and gave the ball right back to Miami to start the second half.

Six plays later, Tua Tagovailoa found Waller for the second time of the day for a 17-3 lead.

Fields wasn’t going away easily, though. New York’s starting quarterback, on a fourth-and-1 midway through the third quarter, scampered outside the pocket on a broken play and recorded a 43-yard touchdown.

The quarterback’s heroics weren’t enough to bring back momentum, though. Aided by several Jets penalties, including two that gifted the Dolphins free first downs, De’Von Achane recorded an eight-yard touchdown run to take a 24-10 lead.

A pair of late field goals from both teams followed. A ridiculous touchdown catch from Garrett Wilson wasn’t enough for the Jets to fulfill their comeback effort, as Miami recovered the ensuing onside kick.

Now at 0-4, the Jets will be back on the field next week with a home contest against the Dallas Cowboys. Kickoff against America’s Team is set for 1 p.m. EST.

Game Notes

  • Braelon Allen suffered a lower body injury and did not return on the ensuing kickoff return that followed his first quarter fumble. Dolphins receiver Tyreek Hill suffered a leg injury as well, and was carted off.
  • New York’s 0-4 mark is the worst start to a season since 2020, a year in which they finished 2-14 to signal the end of the Adam Gase era.
  • The Jets, as they have been for most of the season, were extremely undisciplined on Monday night. New York committed 12 penalties for over 100 yards.
  • It was a night full of struggles for New York, but no one struggled more than returner Isaiah Williams. Not only did he fumble a kick return to start the second half, but he also fair-caught a punt that was at the team’s two-yard line.
  • On the positive side, the Jets did get a good game from rookie tight end Mason Taylor. The second-round pass catcher recorded five receptions for 65 yards on the day.
