The arrival of Nick Mangold marked a significant moment in New York Jets history.
The 2006 NFL draft was abuzz with big-time names. The likes of Reggie Bush, Vince Young and Matt Leinart headlined a star-studded class.
Coming off a miserable 2005 season, the new Eric Mangini-Mike Tannenbaum regime sought to rebuild a depth chart that looked horrendous on paper. And instead of rolling with the glitz and glamour of a quarterback or offensive weapon, the last truly great personnel front office the Jets employed did the right thing.
After selecting D’Brickashaw Ferguson No. 4 overall, they doubled down on offensive line with Ohio State center Nick Mangold at No. 29. Long story short, it was the start of a tremendous era in Jets history.
Mangold, a two-time First-Team All-Pro (2009, 2010) and one-time Second-Team All-Pro (2011), led the Jets’ famous ground-and-pound offensive line.
Mangold’s dominance and consistency puts him up there with Kevin Mawae and Winston Hill as the greatest offensive lineman in Jets history, and he even has a chance to get into the Pro Football Hall of Fame one day.
