How effective can NY Jets offense be with Tyrod Taylor at QB?

Tyrod Taylor’s 2023 film might be better than any New York Jets starting quarterback over the past decade

It’s a dead horse that was beaten throughout the entire 2023 season: “Why didn’t the New York Jets get a better backup quarterback?”

After watching the Jets’ 2023 season fall apart due to the lack of a quality backup to Aaron Rodgers, Joe Douglas didn’t waste any time rectifying the issue in 2024. On the very first day of free agency, Douglas inked Tyrod Taylor to a two-year deal worth up to $18 million.

While it’s a hefty price for a backup quarterback, it’s one worth paying for a Jets team that desperately needed to find the best backup solution it possibly could. On that note, it raises the following question: Is Taylor the best backup quarterback the Jets could have signed?

The answer is a resounding yes, at least based on what the film shows. As far as backup quarterbacks go, it’s difficult to beat Taylor, who is arguably better than some of the 32 quarterbacks who will start in Week 1 this year.

Playing within a horrid Giants offense that featured a turnstile offensive line and few weapons, Taylor looked surprisingly competent in 2023. Of the three quarterbacks to take snaps for the Giants, Taylor clearly gave them the best chance to win. Even at 34 years old, he is a quarterback who can keep the Jets competitive if called upon in 2024.

In the latest Blewett’s Blitz film breakdown, we review 33 plays from Taylor’s 2023 season to showcase a full synopsis of what he brings to the Jets. Plus, a full list of Taylor’s strengths and weaknesses can be found at the bottom of the page.
