Can Isaiah Oliver provide strong depth in a talented New York Jets secondary?
In the NFL, depth is a crucial part of any great unit. The New York Jets’ secondary is outstanding, but they must be prepared to weather the injury storm to ensure greatness in any scenario.
The Jets showed they can do this in a Week 6 win over the Philadelphia Eagles last season. Facing off against Jalen Hurts, A.J. Brown, and DeVonta Smith without Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed, the Jets held Hurts to a 59.5 passer rating and picked him off three times in a 20-14 victory.
Luckily, the Jets have not had to face this situation often due to fortunate injury luck in the defensive backfield. But luck could always turn against you, so the Jets must prepare themselves for that scenario in 2024.
That’s where Isaiah Oliver comes in. A free agent signing from the San Francisco 49ers, Oliver will be one of the Jets’ key backups in the secondary.
Oliver has spent his six-year NFL career as a cornerback. He played on the outside over his first two seasons before transitioning to a slot role over the past four seasons. However, another position change is in store for Oliver as he reunites with Jeff Ulbrich, who was his defensive coordinator in Atlanta for three seasons. According to Ulbrich, Oliver will be moving to safety.
While Oliver is working at safety, his experience at both outside cornerback and slot cornerback makes him a potential backup at any position in the secondary for New York. When/if injuries strike to the Jets’ starting secondary, Oliver will surely be a key component in determining how well the Jets hold up.
What caliber of backup is Oliver? How many positions can be trusted at? Which position is his best?
