Joe Tippmann has the tools to become a star lineman in 2024
John Schmitt. Joe Fields. Kevin Mawae. Nick Mangold.
There might not be a more decorated position in New York Jets history than center. The aforementioned four players combined for 15 All-Pro appearances with the Jets. They also each registered multiple playoff wins as a Jet. The franchise has never won a playoff game without one of those four plays on the team.
Tippmann, the first center selected in the 2023 draft, has the talent to follow in the footsteps of the star Jets centers before him. The Wisconsin product offers a unique combination of athleticism, height, and length – a blend that intrigued the Jets enough to select him with an early second-round pick (43rd overall).
In his 2023 rookie season, the Jets started Tippmann out at right guard before moving him to center for his final 10 starts of the season. Statistically, Tippmann was viewed as an average starting center, which sounds like a great starting point for him. Tippmann was a rookie playing in the middle of a revolving-door offensive line that was ravaged by injuries and poor play. For him to be average in that situation would be quite impressive, setting a high ceiling for him in the future.
But stats are stats. The film is where the truth lies. How well did Tippmann really look in his rookie season? What should Jets fans expect from him in 2024? And where must he improve if he wants to become the fifth All-Pro center in Jets history?
All of those questions are answered in the latest Blewett’s Blitz film breakdown, featuring 63 plays from Tippmann’s 2023 season. The review showcases a full synopsis of Tippmann’s strengths and weaknesses as he enters his second NFL campaign.
