Quinnen Williams has become the game-wrecker he was destined to be
It took some time for Quinnen Williams to get going. He gradually improved over his first three years in the NFL, developing into a quality interior defender for the New York Jets after a so-so rookie season. However, after the conclusion of his third season, he was closer to being a good player than a superstar.
In 2022, his fourth NFL season, Williams finally put everything together, breaking out and becoming one of the best defenders in football. Williams racked up 12 sacks on his way to a first-team All-Pro appearance.
The 2023 season brought high expectations for Williams, as he signed a massive contract extension following his breakout year. To some, Williams didn’t live up to those expectations, as his sack total dipped from 12 to 5.5.
Those people need to look a little bit closer.
Despite his fall in the sack column, Williams was every bit as dominant as he was in 2022, if not more so. In both phases, Williams wrecks the opponent’s game plan. He can single-handedly blow up an otherwise well-blocked run play. In the pass game, he creates pressure on a constant basis. The only way to truly stop him is to double-team him, which creates sacks and hits for his teammates.
