Reporting from Florham Park, NJ — The relationship between New York Jets general manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn has been highly successful so far.
Who ends up getting the final say when the two lead executives have different opinions, though?
Speaking to reporters Monday morning, Mougey explained the process of when both he and Glenn are on opposite sides of a football decision.
Jets’ Final Say
For the better part of the last few months, both Glenn and Mougey have made it clear that football decisions would be made in a collaborative effort.
So when both aren’t on the same page – which can happen during a year-long discussion – the organization seems to know exactly how to get back on that same mindset.
Mougey explained more.
“We haven’t had too many of those, but when we do we just sit there and watch more, and more, and more, and have more dialogue, ‘And what about this, what about that,’ and it’s been great and we’ve had a few of those,” Mougey said. “By the end of it, we’re always on the same page with the same vision, and it’s pretty clear, you just keep watching, keep talking, keep watching, keep talking.”
Communication has been key in the early onsets of the Glenn-Mougey partnership.
It also helps that the team has several obvious needs, so arguments aren’t really necessary at this point. There aren’t any top quarterback prospects to choose from, and the Jets aren’t in a position to compete for a title.
At their basic principle, both Mougey and Glenn are doing what is needed to build a culture of sustained winning. Whether that means targeting offensive or defensive players early in the draft is irrelevant.
They have a method of staying on the same page. If they can continue that and turn the Jets’ losing around, they could very well have a long and fulfilling partnership moving forward.
