With Byron Cowart’s ankle injury surprisingly becoming a season-ender, the New York Jets needed someone who could replace his interior run stopping.
Their first pickup to address the problem? A 2024 seventh-round pick with six NFL games to his name: Jowon Briggs.
New York swapped a sixth-round pick for a seventh-round pick to acquire the 24-year-old defensive tackle. Soon after, the Jets also acquired Harrison Phillips, a veteran run stopper on the interior.
Briggs, though, brings youth and upside to a defensive tackle unit that did not have much of it, especially in terms of run stopping.
While he only played six games as a rookie, Briggs showed promising signs during his time on the field. Elevated to the active roster late in the season, Briggs racked up 13 tackles, two quarterback hits, and a fumble recovery on just 133 defensive snaps.
A former teammate of Sauce Gardner’s at Cincinnati, Briggs offers a stout frame at 6-foot-1 and 313 pounds, while his 39 bench press reps were an elite mark for a defensive tackle. He has the ideal physical makeup to clog gaps in the run game.
But does his film show that he can translate those tools to the field?
In the latest episode of Blewett’s Blitz, we break down Briggs’ All-22 film to glean everything there is to know about his game.
Seen below is the full Jowon Briggs scouting report (strengths and weaknesses) and film review.
