Heading into Week 1, the New York Jets knew they were throwing their top rookie directly into the fire. Pitted against All-Pro EDGE defender T.J. Watt takes a Herculean effort for the best veterans in the league, let alone a rookie.
Unlike other rookies who have taken on Watt in the past, Armand Membou was more than up to the challenge.
Despite New York’s 34-32 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday, Membou faced 25 pass blocking reps while not allowing pressure. He wasn’t penalized and also opened big running lanes for New York.
The Jets’ offense was a glowing success despite the loss. While many eyes are focused on quarterback Justin Fields and/or running back Breece Hall, Membou’s performance should provide the most positivity.
Jets rookie passes debut test
Watt has become one of the greatest modern edge rushers in the league. The fact that Pittsburgh’s star looked outmatched (at times) against Membou—the seventh overall pick in April’s draft out of Missouri—highlights the potential he brings to the table.
Speaking with Jets X-Factor following Sunday’s loss, Membou explained what it felt like facing Watt and Pittsburgh’s elite defense.
“Going against a dude like that, you have to be at your best,” Membou said. “Anytime I went out there against him, I gave it my all.”
He did more than just give it his all; he stymied one of the best edge rushers in modern history, a surefire future Pro Football Hall of Famer.
The best news for Aaron Glenn? He wasn’t the only one.
A group effort
Of New York’s five starting offensive linemen, Membou joined Joe Tippmann and Josh Myers as players who did not give up a pressure in the game. Only John Simpson and Olu Fashanu relented pressures, signaling just how dominant the Jets’ pass protection was on Sunday.
Starting quarterback Justin Fields was sacked just once on Sunday.
As he begins his NFL career, Membou will face plenty of tough matchups. The fact that he passed his first test with flying colors against an All-Pro like Watt is an excellent first step, though.
… even with things he believes he can improve on.
“My overall technique and consistency in my game” is what Membou cited as potential areas of improvement.
The Jets may have lost on Sunday, but their offense showed the kind of success that should make fans excited. At the top of the list is their rookie tackle, who looks every bit the part of a stalwart in 2025 and beyond.
