Film review: NY Jets may have a steal in John Simpson

John Simpson’s film shows a player who should provide a forceful presence on the New York Jets’ offensive line

The New York Jets head into 2024 with an overhauled offensive line, one that is ready to protect Aaron Rodgers and pave the road for Breece Hall. After many years of futility up front, the team finally has a unit that – on paper – looks capable of anchoring an explosive offense.

The headline additions are All-Pro Tyron Smith, experienced veteran Morgan Moses, and first-round pick Olu Fashanu. But don’t forget about left guard John Simpson, who the Jets quietly signed in free agency to a two-year, $12 million deal.

Simpson, 26, was a fourth-round pick of the Raiders in 2020. The Clemson product played three years in Las Vegas until he was waived during his third year. He landed on the Ravens’ practice squad and won Baltimore’s starting left guard job by opening day in 2023.

Simpson went on to start all 19 regular season and playoff games for Baltimore, leading an elite Ravens team in offensive snaps. Within Baltimore’s dominant rushing attack, Simpson gained a reputation as a mauling blocker in the run game, although he struggled with penalties.

What type of skill set does Simpson bring to New York? In which phase of the game is he more reliable? Does he fit the Jets’ offensive vision with Aaron Rodgers and Nathaniel Hackett?

We answer all of those questions in the latest Blewett’s Blitz film review, breaking down 63 plays from Simpson’s 2023 season to showcase a full synopsis of his game. Plus, a full list of Simpson’s strengths and weaknesses can be found at the bottom of the page.
