Do New York Jets fans underestimate Tyler Conklin?
For months, many New York Jets fans hoped to see the team draft Georgia tight end Brock Bowers in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. When the Jets came on the clock at No. 11, Bowers was there for the taking. Joe Douglas passed, instead opting to select Olu Fashanu.
That leaves Tyler Conklin poised for his third consecutive year as the Jets’ TE1. Some might view this as a weakness in the Jets’ offensive lineup, but the film tells a different story.
There’s a reason New York didn’t feel desperate to upgrade its tight end position in the first round. Conklin is a perfectly capable starting tight end, offering the ability to contribute at a solid level in numerous areas. Whether it’s as a pass blocker, run blocker, route runner, or contested catcher, Conklin has the ability to be a plus-impact player in more areas than many fans and media members give him credit for.
Conklin had some good numbers in 2023, catching 61 passes for 621 yards. Both ranked top-15 among tight ends. However, he scored zero touchdowns. Was that any fault of Conklin’s? Or will his touchdown potential be unlocked in an Aaron Rodgers-led offense?
We answer that question in the latest Blewett’s Blitz film breakdown, reviewing 26 plays from Conklin’s 2023 season to showcase the underrated aspects of his game and project how he might perform with Rodgers under center in 2024.
